How do we ensure the referendum vote is respected?
After last week’s meeting, Brexit: the battle for democracy, jointly organised by the Institute of Ideas and spiked, many people have asked - both those who voted Leave and those who voted Remain - about plans for action. There are real fears that a democratic decision may be subverted. A number of different organisations are planning a response - we’ll keep you posted about opportunities to get involved - and do let us know if you hear about events, protests or anything else that may be of interest. Email Geoff Kidder.
In the meantime, here are three concrete steps you can take right now to help make sure the result of the referendum is honoured by the UK government.
The result of the Conservative Party leadership contest - in effect, the selection of our next prime minister - is due to be announced on Friday 9 September. We would like to ensure that the new PM is in no doubt that he or she must implement the referendum result. If you can be in central London on that afternoon, please put the date in your diary. More details to follow as soon as we have them.
While MPs are publicly saying they will respect the outcome of the referendum vote, many are doing so reluctantly and will undoubtedly come under pressure to stop the exit process or to call a second referendum. We think the best way to end this discussion is for the government to deliver on the will of the people and trigger Article 50.
There is already a parliamentary petition online demanding that the government invoke Article 50. You can read and sign it here.
You can find an audio recording of last week’s meeting here.
We will continue to organised public debates on the questions of democracy and Europe. Check our events page for the latest.
